Usually classified as a non-profitable area, the IT Infrastructure department is seen merely as a support area. However, it is changing…
In times of economic crisis, the first things to cut off are operational expenses, is it right? Moreover, we are not only talking about people but also projects and IT equipment such as servers, enhancements to existing infrastructure, network equipment, etc. It has a high cost and is an easy target for budget management.
What if the IT infrastructure knowledge was used together with agile software development? What if IT was seen as a source of value rather than cost? What if IT could provide technological solutions through existing projects, enabling new business strategies?
“It is all possible within DevOps”
DevOps is getting momentum. The movement started around the early 2000s and is part of the agile techniques, which the software industry has successfully adopted in recent years.
That happened because, with the adoption of agile methodologies, IT started to get more requests for continuous deploys, auto-scaling environments, high availability, among others.
With these needs in mind, new tools were created to solve specific problems such as Git, Jenkins, Chef, Puppet, Docker, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, Cloud Computing, and several others.
In addition, new methodologies were formulated to change how systems were developed, for instance, Continuous Delivery, Test-Driven Development, Scrum, XP, etc.
In other words, DevOps is the IT answer to the challenges faced every day. With the new tools and methodologies, it is possible to turn IT services into project deliverables successfully, though becoming a value creator for the company.
